Ego-bypass: A Buddhist Odyssey

   Meditation for Mental Development (bhāvanā)

B. George Blake, PhD

             Vijjāvaddho Bhikkhu (circa 1956)

Preamble
This manual introduces you to Buddhist meditation, and an investigation into the meaning of self as it is conceived in Buddhism and our Western monotheistic traditions. The Buddhist point is that the belief in self as an independent entity corrupts the natural law of interdependence in human relationships and makes it easy for greed, ill-will, and irrational ideation about reality to take root and influence our attitude and behaviour towards one another. An understanding and application of Buddhist psychology will be of benefit in correcting the distortions in thought, behaviour, and values promoted by what this text defines as ego-belief. Ego is used throughout the manual as a synonym for self.
